LGBT Activism

It's up to US to fight for our equality, our rights, our families, our future. Join The Armchair Activist in being part of the solution.

Those who aren't a part of the solution are part of the problem. From fighting for hate-crimes protections to speaking out on human-rights atrocities overseas to demanding legal equality for all, we can count only on ourselves to take up the struggle. So, DO SOMETHING about it, even if it's from your computer keyboard or your cozy armchair. In this group, let's share ideas, brainstorm, and band together to do justice. You can make a difference -- right now, online or in the flesh. Please feel free to post action alerts and news items addressing a variety of GLBT and progressive causes. If you want to discuss ideas, go right ahead. Let's create a community of doers and do-gooders. Let's work together and make a difference for the community and the society at large.

from Marriage Equality USA
http://www.marriageequality.org/

The grassroots movement is alive and well and we need to help people come together to re-group and stay energized! We are hoping to help provide a forum for our communities, new leaders, coalition organizations to share their collective thoughts and feedback about what worked and what did not work all around California, and funnel it all into one shared document of collective wisdom to use going forward for equality battles throughout the US.

MEUSA has created an online survey to not only collect input on Prop 8, but where we go nationally with our marriage equality movement. This national survey will help us include input from our grassroots movement on what is effective within your local communities. We hope you fill it out and share it with others, your input is important to us.

The survey can be found at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=vVtbAaBoxoy_2fYh5doKPB4g_3d_3d .

Great idea! I live in SC but if I can do anything to help gain our equal rights and spread the word, count me in. Armchair Activist - that's me! I sent Obama a postcard this morning because Join the Impact said we needed to all send postcards from our hometowns so he'll know gays are EVERYWHERE!

Thank the goddess for the legal groups!
Rainbow Law Comment by Rainbow Law on November 23, 2008 at 1:49pm
Great to be a part of this group!

We are Carrie & Elisia Ross-Stone, lesbian partners and founders of Rainbow Law, an LGBTQ advocacy, information and education service.

We do many things to advocate for legal equality for the LGBTQ community. Among them are: Making free and affordable legal documents to help partners and families protect their rights; publishing an online newsletter and directory of businesses and services at www.rainbowzine.com; presenting free estate planning workshops, providing a free estate planning workbook to anyone who requests it...

AND, our proudest achievement -- riding our bicycles across America to advocate for marriage equality.

Let's fight PROPOSITION H8!

There are actually many US groups that focus on trans issues because, yes, HRC has paid mostly lip service that that segment of our family. (Shame on HRC.) Of course there is GenderPAC gpace.org. Another great site is transgender.org. Another resource is the Transgender Law and Policy Institute at transgenderlaw.org. I also recommend the National Center for Transgender Equality at and FTM International at ftmi.org. GenderPACs site lists many more groups, including resources for MTFs.

Ok. So someone challenged me on stepping up and moving forward the need for trans issues and for us to speak out. As a Canadian in the US on a work visa, I'm rather limited to what I can do (I cannot create an organization that might challenge my host country's government -- whether for rights or not) but I'm willing to work in whatever manner (e.g., door-to-door, cold calling, techie stuff, etc.) to move this forward. To that end, I started this.

I have doubts that many of the LGBTQ organizations really can put forward trans issues. It's not because they don't care but rather because other issues -- namely same-sex marriage/union and adoption rights (amongst others) -- are at the forefront of their burners right now. And yes, for many trans this does affect them. I also do not trust HRC to support trans issues after the ENDA fiasco. To that end I do think we need an organization that represents fully all MTFs, FTMs and all the gender variants in-between to the political offices at the highest level in this country (and others). The issues that have to be addressed include (but not limited to):

- right to recognition as a person regardless of surgeries
- right to respectful health care regardless of transition or non-transition status
- right to job protection and respectful treatment at work
- right to be stealth and not outed if choose not to
- recognition that crimes against trans individuals because they are trans should be viewed as hate crimes

I don't know of any organization that is representative of all trans and effective for all of this. But if one doesn't exist I'd be willing to work on it (I just cannot be at the forefront)...

So.. ideas? Thoughts? etc?

November 20 is Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialize those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.

Although not every person represented during the Day of Remembrance self-identified as transgender — that is, as a transsexual, crossdresser, or otherwise gender-variant — each was a victim of violence based on bias against transgender people.

For information on TDOR's 10th anniversary and lists of events, visit the Transgender Day of Remembrance Web site.

And please observe the day -- these people are our family. They deserve honor. They deserve to be remembered with sadness for their plight, resolve to make the world a more compassionate and just place, and love and thanks for honoring us with their existence for the time they were here.
